Two sample rule definition:
Blood Bank must ensure that there are TWO distinct samples from a patient that have generated the same blood group from both samples before ABO matched components are issued.
7 day sample validity:
If a transfusion is required, then a sample needs to be taken within 7 days prior to the transfusion. Exceptions are pregnant women; recently transfused patient and patients 3 months post solid organ transplant where the 72hour sample validity rule will remain.
