Ethyl glucuronide and ethyl sulphate are sensitive markers of ethanol ingestion. They remain detectable in urine for up to 3 days after alcohol has been consumed.

Only available to the liver transplant team for service evaluation purposes. Send to lab immediately – sample must be frozen on date of collection to maintain sample integrity. Result interpretation: A positive result is highly suggestive of ethanol ingestion. False positive results may occur where yeast, glucose and bacteria contaminate the urine and the sample is stored incorrectly. False negatives may occur when bacteria contaminate the urine and the sample is stored incorrectly.

Instructions to lab
1. Sample must be sent to Block 46 reception ASAP
2. Book the sample in (test code on Tpath = EGLU1R)
3. Scan the request form into DART
4. If there is more than 5mL of sample, split the sample so that 5mL remains in the primary tube and the rest is put into a plain universal labelled with the patient name, DOB or NHS number and the lab number
5. Place the scanned request form, the primary tube and the labelled aliquot into a specimen bag
6. Place the specimen bag in the cardboard box labelled ‘Liz Fox Ethyl Glucuronide’ in the TMS lab walk in freezer (right hand, top shelf)
7. Write on the B46 reception notice board that a sample has been received so that Liz and Carys can then vet the sample to decide if it needs sending to King’s
