
Tested for as part of a multiplex PCR test to diagnose presence of virus which may or may not be the cause of respiratory disease.
Further testing is available for subtyping of Influenza A viruses including seasonal influenza (H1N1 and H3N2) and avian flu.
Container / Tube
Nose and throat combined swab in Red cap Universal Transport Medium (UTM) or alternatively the Green cap Virus Specimen Collection UTM.
NB: Please AVOID using Copan eSwab (which has a pink cap) for this test NPA, BAL, and Tracheal aspirate – send secretions in white universal.
Collection Conditions
Samples should reach the laboratory by 9:30am for same day testing. If delays occur refrigerate at 2-8 °C.
Minimum volume 1 ml fluid.
Availability
Respiratory testing at weekends is normally performed on Sundays only except in peak influenza season when testing is 7 days.

Sputum samples are not suitable for testing.
