Lipoprotein(a) is a ‘low density lipoprotein variant’. Elevated Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, particularly when in the presence of other lipid risk factors such as high LDL, low HDL and thrombogenic risk factors. It has a high affinity for the arterial wall and displays many athero-thrombogenic properties.
