Additional Information
HYPOMAGNASAEMIA: Mg deficiency is often associated with signs of hypocalcaemia (Mg is a cofactor of PTH). Deficiency is relatively uncommon as the body can conserve Mg well but can occur due to reduced intake caused by GI disorders (steatorrhea, malabsorption etc). Renal disease can cause hypomagnasemia due to increased urinary loss or defects in renal reabsorption. Also consider hyperaldosteronism, hyperparathyroidism and DM (increased urinary loss). Diuretics, alcohol and nephrotoxic drugs (aminoglycosides, cyclosporinn, cis-platin) can also cause hypomagnasaemia.
