
Culture and sensitivity of swabs of material from wounds and other superficial parts of the body are used to identify the bacterial causative agent and determine appropriate antibiotic sensitivity. Automated liquid culture is used with manual plate reading.

Collection Conditions
Remove any frank pus from the surface of wound. This may require irrigation of the wound with sterile normal saline. Use sterile swab to bottom of wound or areas that are visibly infected.

Additional Information
Swabs from ulcers are discouraged. The preferred specimen from ulcers is a biopsy or aspirate. Cleaning / debridement is essential before collecting specimens from ulcers.
