Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually-transmitted gram-negative bacterium that is fastidious and difficult to culture.
Mycoplasma genitalium infection is a major cause of urethritis in men and is associated with cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm birth, and spontaneous abortion in women. It has similar symptoms to Chlamydia but is more resistant to treatment and if left untreated, can lead to PID in women.
M.gen NAAT testing is a requirement of the BASHH guidelines.
