Osmolality will usually be increased in water depletion, DKA, hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS), diabetes insipidus, and with alcohol ingestion. Osmolality will usually be low in adrenal insufficiency, water intoxication and SIADH. Please note: test can only be added to samples within 6 hours of collection (adults) OR within 2 hours of collection (paediatric). For information on water deprivation test, please see WDT page.
