Progesterone belongs to a class of hormones called progestogens, and is the major naturally occurring human progestogen. Its primary indication is for confirmation of ovulation and assessment of the adequacy of the luteal phase.

The higher the progesterone concentration, the more likely it is that ovulation has occurred. Optimal luteal phase is indicated by progesterone 25-60 nmol/L seven days prior to the next menstrual period (i.e. day 21 of a 28 day cycle). Concentrations <10 nmol/L indicate an inadequate luteal phase.
