Normal levels do not exclude a prolactinoma which could be associated with subtle abnormalities of prolactin excretion. Upto 700 IU/L – normal. Upto 1000 IU/L consider repeat. 1000 – 2000 IU/L consider microprolactinoma, drugs, PCO, hypothalamic disorder including functionless pituitary tumour with suprasellar extension, primary hypothyroidism. 2000 – 4000 IU/L microprolactinoma, hypothalamic disorder (also drugs but less likely) 4000 – 6000 IU/L Almost certainly a prolactinoma although hypothalamic disorder is possible. >6000IU/L Macroprolactinoma.
