The prothrombin time (PT) assays the extrinsic and common pathways of the coagulation cascade. The international normalised ratio (INR) is calculated from the PT. The INR has no utility other than monitoring warfarin.
There are very few situations in which a PT will be requested as a standalone test.
If you wish to monitor warfarin please request an INR.
If the patient’s haemostatic function needs to be assayed eg in the setting of active bleeding, please request a coagulation screen and Clauss fibrinogen.
