Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) is performed in Immunology. It involves the separation of serum proteins according to their electric charge. This is essential in the investigation of suspected paraproteinaemia / monoclonal gammopathy. Characteristic patterns are also seen in the presence of an acute phase response.

New paraproteins identified by electrophoresis are typed by immunofixation and those >3g/L are quantified. It is recommended that urine is also screened by electrophoresis.
