
Anti- smooth muscle antibodies are part of an autoantibody screen which includes gastric parietal cell antibodies, liver kidney microsomal antibodies and mitochondrial antibodies that can be detected using mouse liver, kidney and stomach multiblock slides.

This assay is based on an immunofluorescence assay. Specifically, antibodies to F-actin are most strongly associated with autoimmune hepatitis type I however specific assays are not routinely available. Present in up to 50 to 80% of patients with autoimmune hepatitis type I and in 20% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Also found in viral hepatitis.
