We wish to advise users that following the change in platform used for the diagnosis of HSV-1 / HSV-2 / Syphilis by PCR, there is a delay in turnaround time as we transition the service.
We would like to also remind users that the new platform requires a different swab for the diagnosis of genital ulceration. Please no longer send Copan UTM-RT (red top tubes) but instead send Aptima STM (orange labelled tubes – see image below).

Syphilis testing is available as part of a Multiplex PCR assay for the diagnosis of causes of ulcerative lesions of the genital tract.

The optimal time of specimen collection is the acute phase of illness. Orange Aptima swab is the required transport medium. Min. Vol 350. If delays occur, refrigerate at 2 to 8 degrees C.
