Uric acid is the final breakdown product of purine metabolism in humans. It is used in the investigation of numerous renal and metabolic disorders including gout, myeloma, widespread malignancies, chronic alcoholism and hyperlipidaemia. It is also a useful marker of cell damage in tumour lysis syndrome.
