Vitamin A is one of the fat soluble vitamins. It is essential for normal vision and structure and function of the skin and mucous membranes. It has an essential role during embryogenensis and development. If taken in excess it is hepatotoxic and can interfere with calcium and bone metabolism. During pregnancy excess vitamin A can be teratogenic. Vitamin E is measured at the same time.
