Zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) may be elevated when haem production is inhibited by lead and/or by lack of iron. This test is a non-specific indicator of disrupted haemoglobin synthesis. For the investigation of possible lead poisoning, please request Blood Lead measurement. For the investigation of iron deficiency anaemia, please request serum Ferritin measurement (full blood count and a blood film may also be helpful as second line tests for iron deficiency).
