Acute Stroke Unit (L21)

The Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) has 25 beds and is based on Ward L21.

ASU is for stroke patients requiring further medical, nursing and therapy support after the initial 72 hours.

The unit brings together experts from a range of disciplines who provide a specialised multi-disciplinary team approach to stroke treatment. The team comprises of specialist doctors, dietitians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. The ward is also visited on a weekly basis by our Stroke Ambassadors – who are stroke survivors themselves.

The team work within an efficient and structured model of care with daily ward rounds and weekly multidisciplinary team meetings. The focus is on continuous assessment and early rehabilitation to establish the impact of the stroke on a person’s daily life and any support they may require to lessen the impact.

Some patients may leave hospital straight from ASU. However, the multi-disciplinary team may decide that some stroke patients need on-going and longer-term rehabilitation. The decision may then be made to transfer to the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit.

How to find us

Ward L21 is found on G Floor of Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary.  Once you have exited the lifts on Level G turn down the left hand corridor and the ward is located at the very end on the left-hand side.

We ask that all visitors wash their hands on entry and exit of the ward instead of using the hand gel. There is a hand washing sink located immediately opposite you once you enter the ward.

How you can help

We encourage all patients to bring in their own toiletries and clothing so that, where possible, they can be fully dressed and not wear pyjamas. Please feel free to bring in any other items that you think your relative might need or enjoy e.g. books, Sudoku, crosswords etc. Electronic items such as laptops, iPods and iPads can be brought but please consider safety of expensive items or large sums of money. We have free hospital WiFi on site.
