Pharmacy Services

Medicines Management and Pharmacy Services support the delivery of high quality, specialist, and expert care for all our patients by ensuring the safe supply and accessibility of medicines. We work hard to make sure we have medicines available for patients, and those who care for them before they need them.

The department is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with multiple specialist services providing support to St James’s University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary, Chapel Allerton and Seacroft Hospitals, and our partner organisations across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Our services deliver:

• The purchase, commission and supply of medicines
• Preparative services such as medicine production from MHRA licensed units, Aseptics, Nutrition and Radiopharmacy
• Clinical Services (Planned Care, Cancer Care and Unplanned Care across all specialties)
• Quality, safety and risk management, and the Leeds Medicines Advisory Service providing information for professionals
• Research and innovation, with an extensive portfolio of research and clinical trials.

Who we are

We have a large expert workforce made up of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, scientists, manufacturing technicians, pharmacy support workers, doctors, nurses and business support staff.

What we do

• Ensure medicines are used in the most effective and appropriate way
• Managing medicines by checking prescriptions: Right dose? Right condition?
• Medicine safety – monitoring patients’ condition ensuring checks, such as blood tests, are performed.

Patient centred approach

• We help patients and their carers understand what medicines they need to take and when to take them
• We support patients and their carers to understand what the medicines are being used for and understand the possible side effects
• We work with patients when they are unable to take their medicines to find alternative ways around the problem e.g., liquids rather than tablets, use of compliance aids or reminder cards.
