Leeds Centre for Neurosciences

The Neurosciences centre is largely based at Leeds General Infirmary and covers the following specialties of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, Stroke Services and Research.

What we do

The Neurology service encompasses the investigation and treatment of conditions relating to the nervous system, including brain tumours, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, dementia, motor neurone disease, neuro-ophthalmology, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and more common disorders requiring specialist consultation e.g. headache and dizziness.

Neurosurgery (including Paediatric Neurosurgery) is a highly specialised regional service, which offers healthcare and surgical expertise to children and adults with diseases/injuries to the brain or nervous system. These include brain haemorrhages and tumours. Subspecialties include spinal, skullbase, pituitary, epilepsy, vascular and trauma surgery.

The Stroke Service has re-organised in recent years and is now based at the LGI. It covers a comprehensive range of services available to patients who have suffered a stroke or are showing signs of a stroke including a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, Acute Stroke Unit and Stroke Rehabilitation.

Neurology, Stroke and Neurosurgery Research is run from the LGI and covers a wide array of studies e.g. observational studies and those including IMPs (Investigational Medicinal Products).  The studies are run by a dedicated team of nurses and support staff.

The Neurosurgical and Neurological services and supported by comprehensive Neuroradiology, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology services.

There is also an extensive research programme running within the Neurosciences department.
