Rheumatology

The Rheumatology service in Leeds has an international reputation for the management and investigation of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

What we do

We have been recognised as a centre of excellence in rheumatology by EULAR (European League against Rheumatism) since 2005. In April 2008, a prestigious £4m research centre award from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) was awarded to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the University of Leeds to establish the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU), in recognition of our status as a world leader in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases translational research.

Clinical Services

City-wide musculoskeletal clinical services are now centrally based at Chapel Allerton Hospital (CAH), however services are also provided across a number of sites throughout Leeds.

Dedicated rheumatology inpatients beds are available at both CAH and SJUH. Within the rheumatology outpatients at CAH, there is a dedicated diagnostics suite (with MRI, high resolution ultrasound, dual energy x-ray absorptionometry, needle arthroscopy facilities and a gait analysis laboratory).

The rheumatology clinical services in Leeds are organised around a number of general and specialised NHS clinics, each led by a Consultant and supported by a number of junior doctors in training. Most clinics are directly bookable via ‘Choose and Book’ to ensure rapid access to our dedicated and experienced team of Rheumatologists. Senior Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialists provide additional support to both practitioners and patients through their monitoring clinics and via the nurse-led telephone helpline.
