Claudia PoyntonClaudia is a Staff Nurse on J83 at St James’s and has worked at the Trust for 1 year. She recently received the Janet Whitaker Award, which recognises nurses who have gone the extra mile for their patients.

“The day-to-day aspects of my role consist of looking after patients who have had a liver transplant or patients who have had general liver surgery. Additionally, I work alongside the multidisciplinary team to assess if patients are suitable for a liver transplant.

“I provide patients their medications whilst also supporting their preparations for returning home through encouraging and helping them learn about these medications, in order to make them as ready as possible for life outside of the hospital.

“Further to this I frequently attend extra study days or training days to discover more about hepatology, which in turn has helped me learn more about my patients and this increased knowledge has proved useful in giving them even better care.

“My favourite thing about working in LTHT is the team I work with. They are all very supportive and going into work each day is more enjoyable because of them. I am also a learning disability and autism champion and relish working with other champions from all over the Trust meaning I can bring new ideas to my ward and improve the patient experience. I have received ample support during my first year as a qualified nurse, from both the Trust as a whole and from individual colleagues; which has helped me learn and develop a lot of new and invaluable skills.

“Outside of work I enjoy CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, and cycling. I recently completed my first triathlon as well as enjoying the Yorkshire three peaks challenge with my colleagues.”
