Volunteer Opportunities
This volunteering role will make a really difference to cancer patients’ experience, can you help?
We are looking for volunteers who are warm and empathetic, to help with reception duties and the first point of contact for patients and their families attending the centre. You will be someone who has experience working face to face and on the telephone with patients and or members of the public.
What do we need:
- Aged 21+
- Ability to demonstrate empathy
- An excellent telephone manner
- To be an effective listener
- Willingness to attend training sessions and enhance skills and keep up to date with information about the service
- Willingness to help in other areas of the service if required
- Have an interest in cancer care and the services that Leeds Cancer Support and Macmillan Cancer Support provide
- Can commit to one shift weekly (Monday -Friday) times to be arranged for the next 12 months.

Are you available to volunteer once a week Monday to Friday from 10.30am -2pm at Chapel Allerton Hospital, LS7 4SA. Supporting Patient experience and activities on the Rehabilitation ward.
The Rehabilitation ward at Chapel Allerton has patients who spend a substantial amount of time in hospital, which can leave them isolated and disengaged.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who will provide support over the lunchtime period and to help patients participate in individual or group activities, games, or crafts.
This role will help promote patients’ wellbeing, provide stimulation, reduce boredom, and distress and reduce the risk of deconditioning.
Here is a little of what you will you be doing:
- Sitting with patients in the dining room at mealtimes, to socialise and normalise eating.
- Offer encouragement to those who require prompts and reminders during mealtimes.
- Befriending and initiating conversations with patients
- Using initiative, setting up and running activities with patients individually or those in groups e.g., Bingo, Ball games, cards, reading, making crafts, painting etc.
- Supporting and encouraging identified patients to join in with activities and games
About You
- You must be friendly and approachable and happy to chat with patients.
- Minimum Age of 18+
- Excellent, confident communication skills
- Creative and enthusiastic
- Good mobility as this is an active role.
- Happy to work as a team and support other volunteers in the same role.
- Can show initiative and work independently.
- Committed to one weekday shift 10.30am -2pm for at least the next 12 months.

This role will make a really difference to those attending hospital, can you help?
The Discharge Lounge at St James Hospital can be an extremely busy area that looks after patients, waiting to go home or for onward travel. Patients often must wait in this area for long periods of time. During this time patients can feel worried, confused, and isolated.
We are looking for volunteers in the Discharge Lounge to support the staff by making hot drinks, preparing snacks, and chatting to patients.
We will also be offering additional training to volunteers in this role including supporting those with additional needs, or sight or visual impairment, and wheelchair training.
We are looking for volunteers who are:
- Aged 18+
- Friendly and welcoming
- Happy to run a small kitchen making drinks and preparing sandwiches.
- Keep the kitchen area tidy/wash up.
- Have excellent, and confident communication skills.
- Ability to share key information in a clear and helpful manner.
- Happy to instigate a conversation.
- Happy to work as a team and support the staff.
- Can show initiative and work independently.
- Confident in approaching strangers.
- Can commit to one shift where possible weekly (Monday -Friday) 11am – 3pm for at least the next 12 months.
Additional skills would be welcome such as: second language, BSSL, dementia awareness, understanding of disability access needs, awareness of learning disabilities and autism, supporting those who are deaf or blind, experience of working with young or older people.

This role will make a really difference to those attending hospital, can you help?
The Emergency Departments (ED) at St James’s Hospital & Leeds General Infirmary are extremely busy areas that see a huge number of patients, visitors, carers and family members each day. We know that these hospital areas can be difficult to navigate due to their size and complexity, with people often becoming lost, confused, and anxious. Those visiting are often unwell, worried, and unsure of who to approach to ask for information on; directions, services on sites, amenities, onwards travel and additional support.
Situated in the emergency departments you will be in contact with anyone coming into the department. You will offer a listening ear, comfort and support. Sign post people and accompany anyone who is unsure of where they need to go to get them safely and without delay to the area, they need to be in. You may be required to provide some patients with refreshments and operate a tea trolly. We will equip you with training and site-specific knowledge, way finding skills, and knowledge about the local area, transport, and amenities so you can help anyone that comes into the department.
We will also be offering additional training to volunteers in this role including supporting those with additional needs, or sight or visual impairment, and wheelchair training.
We are looking for volunteers who have:
- At least 2 years’ experience working/volunteering with members of the public or in a patient facing role.
- Minimum Age of 21+
- Excellent, confident communication skills
- Ability to share key information in a clear and helpful manner.
- Good mobility as this is an active role.

Are you a qualified Hairdresser? Would you be available to volunteer at Chapel Allerton Hospital LS7 4SA?
The Rehabilitation ward at Chapel Allerton has patients who spend a substantial amount of time in hospital.
We are looking for a qualified Hairdresser to provide hairdressing services 1 or 2 days per month for patients residing on the Rehabilitation Ward. To help promote patients’ wellbeing, and boost morale.
We are looking for a volunteer who can:
- Wash hair
- Blow dry and style Hair
- Trim hair
- Shave heads
- Use Roller sets
- Provide Beard and moustache trims
What are the requirements?
- A Hairdressing Level 3 Qualification
- At least 2 years’ experience providing hairdressing services to clients/members of the public in a work or volunteering environment.
- Someone Willing to hold an Honorary Contract with The Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust
- You must be punctual and dependable and committed to attend regularly for at least 6 months / 75 hours of volunteering
- Have access to their own equipment

Do you want to learn more about gardening, make new friends and care for the hospital gardens?
We are currently recruiting volunteers to our new Gardening Club role based at St James’s Hospital with the possibility of some cross site sessions across other sites in the future.
The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust White Rose Wellbeing Garden, designed by award-winning garden designer and RHS Ambassador Adam Frost and created in partnership between the Trust and the RHS, the UK’s leading gardening charity, helping people and plants to grow.
The wellbeing garden at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is a relaxing and restorative space for NHS staff, volunteers, patients and visitors to take time out and enjoy.
The Volunteer Gardening Club will support the ongoing maintenance of the garden along wish supporting staff to use and care the space also and is a great way to support the health and wellbeing of staff at our busy NHS Trust.
Our roles are open to anyone 18 years or older, who can commit to gifting their time for a minimum of 50 hours/6 months and can meet any additional requirements specific to a role. We are looking for anyone who is interested in gardens or learning more about gardening and full training will be provided.
Volunteers will be:
- Supporting with the general maintenance and upkeeping of the garden
- Helping with seasonal activities such as pruning, seed sowing, planting, weeding, deadheading, watering, mulching etc.
- Supporting staff to engage with the garden encouraging their support with activities in the garden and providing information about the garden
- Helping to facilitate workshops in the garden
We are looking for volunteers who are:
- Aged 18 +
- You must have a professional and friendly demeanour.
- You must be punctual and dependable.
Additional skills would be welcome as we plan to run health and wellbeing workshops in the garden so anyone willing to facilitate sessions would also be welcome to apply, or have a further conversation with us about how they can get involved.

Would you be interested in volunteering at the new Rob Burrow Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Centre at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds.
This volunteer role will make a really difference to patients’ experience, can you help?
The volunteer Complementary Therapist will be supporting patients, families & carers by providing complementary therapy such as gentle Massage, Reiki, Mindfulness and Yoga. This will be a relaxing experience and may help reduce a patient’s stress, anxiety and improve mood. Complementary & supportive therapies will be available free of charge to patients & families/carers affected by MND.
What do we need:
· Somebody who is a qualified professional therapist.
· Minimum of Level 3 Diploma in massage therapy or
· Reiki Level 2
· In date Registration with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)
· Willing to hold an Honorary Contract with The Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust
· At least 2 years’ experience including providing this type of treatment to clients/members of the public in a work or volunteering environment.
· You must be punctual and dependable and committed to attend regularly for at least 6 months / 75 hours of volunteering.
