Business and Finance

We provide finance review for Schedule of Events Cost Attribution Templates (SoECATs) and Interactive Costing Tools (iCTs) whilst also overseeing Research Delivery Teams recruitment to time and target and Income and Expenditure performance.

Working across the matrix of Research and Innovation (R&I), we: 

  • Support pre-award activities with guidance from the Grant Funding Development Manager 
  • Facilitate study set-up processes in collaboration with the Research Assurances & Approvals Facilitation team (RAAFt), the R&I Finance Team, the Research Contracts Manager and the Business Managers 
  • Provide on-study support from the Assistant Business Manager 

Business and Finance team

Providing finance review, whilst also overseeing Research Delivery Teams recruitment to time and target and Income and Expenditure performance. 

Offering support and advice on the following: 

  • Interactive Costing Tool (iCT) and SoECAT for finance approval. 
  • Recruitment to Time and Target RAG (red, amber, green) performance. 
  • Review of income and expenditure from a business perspective. 
  • National Contract Value Review (NCVR). 

Managing and supporting the following: 

  • Managing over 32 (and growing CSU’s) 
  • Supporting set up of Cost Centres 
  • Building financial trackers to validate costs  
  • Managing Study invoiceable activity  
  • Sponsor relationship management and validations 
  • Invoicing  
  • Supporting R&I Finance with creating forecasting reports 
  • Reporting on Invoiced activity for each CSU 
  • Supporting Credit Income and Treasury with allocations of invoiced income and credit notes 

Research Contracts Manager

Drafting, Reviewing and Negotiating Research Contracts 

  • Manage research-related agreements, including the development, review, amendment, and negotiation of research contracts on behalf of the Trust 
  • Negotiation and execution of research and innovation agreements 
  • Ensure investigators are aware of their contractual obligations, regulatory issues and research management requirements and provide advice and guidance where necessary 
  • Identify and draft the appropriate type of contract required for new projects: e.g., research funding; data registry; clinical trial; medical device research agreements 
  • Leading negotiations and agreeing contractual terms on commercial contracts with Life Sciences companies (Pharma, Biotech, Medtech, Digital), Contract Research Organisations (CROs), with appropriate advice and guidance as required from legal professionals 
  • Lead negotiations with industry sponsors on contractual matters 
  • Negotiate with NHS and University partners to set up and agree terms of non-commercial contracts 
  • Provide advice on funding organisations’ terms and conditions for research grant contracts 
  • Provide advice to LTHT staff on intellectual property rights as required 
  • Provide advice and answer enquiries about the Trust’s research related policies and procedures, and provide advice to researchers, departments and sponsors and other external parties on contractual matters including queries concerning IP management 
  • Deal with enquiries and requests for information and provide advice to the LTHT R&I Director of Operations or other senior officers when requested 
  •  Supporting set up of Cost Centres 
  • Invoicing 
  • Tracking Contract Amendments and Fully Executed Contracts and chasing where necessary. 
  • Responsible for uploading Contracts and relevant documents to EDGE 
  • Dealing with queries for both the Business Team and Contracts Manager 
  • Responsible for dealing with CCC and liaising with Finance 
  • Setting up Trackers for studies  
  • Looking after the Contracts Inbox 
  • Setting up Trackers and dealing with queries for the CRN 

Finance requests

For finance requests, please email the Grant Funding Development Manager (GFDM). 

You will need to include the study title in the subject of the email. 

The GFDM will need the following information to be able to contact the correct accountant: 

  • Study title 
  • Funding call with web link 
  • Clinical Service Unit (CSU) 
  • Estimated start date 
  • Estimated duration (months) 
  • Will you need finance to sign off the application? 

For each member of staff, please provide the following information: 

  • Full name/Agenda for Change (AfC) band or equivalent 
  • Start date on the study 
  • Duration on the study (months) 
  • Whole time equivalent (WTE) or hours 

If you reach out to the accountant yourself, please copy the GFDM into the email so the request can be tracked. 

Finance requests can take up to 2 weeks to process. 

You need to start collecting this information as early as possible in case you request any changes to your request. Each change can take another 2 weeks to process.
