Critical Care Nephrology
We were an early adopter of Regional Citrate Anticoagulation and are a Reference Centre for Fresenius RRT. As such we welcome visits from units considering a switch to citrate and are happy to discuss our experience of making the change and evolving the protocols. Please contact Dr James Beck.
We have developed a range of educational material for the use of citrate RRT and are actively involved in research in this area.
Organ Donation
We have a well-developed team leading our Organ Donation service. Recent high profile campaigns have raised the profile of the Organ Donor Register. For more information please contact Dr Simon Flood or Dr Mike Adlam.
Students
Medical
The trust is attached to Leeds Medical School and we frequently have medical students with us for their placements in critical care. There is opportunity to review patients and present cases as well as shadowing the team both within ICU and around the hospital during Outreach. For students who are considering a career in critical care we are happy to discuss SSP or elective opportunities.
Nursing
We have regular study placements from the local universities and have a support package in place for them. Feedback from previous students has been excellent.
Clinical Fellowships
We offer Clinical Fellowships to junior doctors wanting to gain experience on ICU, post F2 onwards can apply. We provide structured training, protected time for individual projects and support in applying for Anaesthesia and ICM training posts.
Recent fellows have developed echo skills, set up and run ICM sim training, undertaken a number of QI projects, submitted posters to international meetings and gained medical education qualifications.
Contact Dr Matt Powell if interested.
Educational and acclimatisation support
We appreciate that working in a new environment and new country is a significant challenge even when you have years of experience in medicine. The following links and book suggestions are designed to help.
Our regional trainee and education website – this includes a number of links to excellent FOAM resources.
Education and FOAM
We aim to deliver regular, high quality, teaching both at the bedside and in seminar format. There is also regional FFICM teaching and connection with the local faculty approved FFICM Course.
There are a number of members of the team who are FICE mentors and we are hoping to develop a CUSIC mentor group also.
The local FICM tutors are Dr Lorna Eyre (SJUH) and Dr John Oram (LGI).
See Yorkshire ICM for our regional trainee site.
We have an enthusiastic nurse education team with developmental packages provided for all grades of staff with supporting study days.
New starters have a comprehensive package of study days supporting the STEPS programme. This includes days dedicated to Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Neuro, IV’s, Gastro/Hepatology, AKI, RRT and Safety & Communication with supporting workbooks.
