The Leeds Liver Unit offers training in all aspects of liver transplantation, hepatobiliary and transplant surgery, live donor transplantation, complex hepatology, general hepatology, acute and sub-acute liver failure, viral hepatitis and hepatobiliary cancer including hepatocellular carcinoma.
Hepatology Training
Medical hepatology training is provided through the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery placements in Core Medical Training and Gastroenterology Specialist Training. The unit also offers Advanced Training Posts in Hepatology for Gastroenterology trainees wishing to obtain sub-specialty experience in Hepatology, administered through the national training scheme. The Department of Hepatology also offers training through Clinical Fellowships. Clinical Research Fellowships are available for junior doctors wishing to gain some experience in clinical research ahead of applying for training numbers or with a view to applying for research grants to study for a higher degree. Our fellowships are advertised on the NHS jobs website.
We have also had visiting doctors from other countries, funded by their own hospitals, train with us, and have welcomed trainees from Spain and Egypt into the Department through this route in recent years.

All our trainees are assigned an educational supervisor and undergo regular appraisal.
The Department of Hepatology achieved satisfaction ratings of 80% or higher from trainees in 2016 in the Training Survey for their overall satisfaction with their training, their clinical supervision, their supervision out of hours, the quality of their induction, their educational supervision and their feedback.
