This section is for healthcare professionals considering a referral
The NHS Yorkshire and Humber Oral Medicine Referral Guide provides a clinical framework and guidance for healthcare professionals when considering making a referral.
These guides are available in PDF formats:
Conditions that fall within the scope of Oral Medicine practice include, but are not limited to:
- Persistent or recurrent oral ulcers
- Lichen planus and blistering oral conditions
- Soft tissue lumps and swellings of the oral cavity
- Other white and red patches
- Pigmented patches
- Sore lips or mouth
- Persistent facial pain and burning mouth symptoms
- Dry mouth, hypersalivation and other salivary gland diseases
- Orofacial granulomatosis
If Oral Cancer is suspected, then referral should be made via the local urgent “Fast-Track” 2 week cancer service and not via the Oral Medicine Referral Form.
Further information can be found through the Dental Referrals Cancer Website Page.
The inclusion of clinical photographs with your referral is highly recommended as this will improve both the triaging of referrals and clinical care.
Please note, that referrals where there is insufficient information will be rejected with the risk of delayed clinical care.
Dental Referrals
For referrals from the primary care dental team use the electronic-Referral Management System (e-RMS) via the e-RMS Website.
NHS e-Referral Service
Other Healthcare Professionals in Primary Care should make referrals via the NHS e-Referral Service.
Please note that the responsibility for making an appropriate referral rests with the referring healthcare professional.
