Measurement of serum complement C3 and C4 is useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of immune complex disease eg SLE. Investigation of renal/joint/connective tissue disorders (especially SLE). Also recurrent infections (VERY rare).

Additional Information Complement concentrations are acute phase proteins and are therefore increased in inflammatory conditions hence concentrations may be normal, despite complement consumption, in some inflammatory and infective disorders.Low levels of complement are found in eg Renal disease (acute or chronic glomerulanephritis), SLE (levels reflect disease activity as well as being low during active disease), some forms of Vasculitis, Septicaemia (gram negative) and Endocarditis.
