The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

New Chief Medical Officer appointed

29 June 2023

The newly appointed Chief Medical Officer is Dr Magnus Harrison, who joins permanently this October to the role previously held by current Chief Executive, Professor Phil Wood.

Dr Harrison has held Executive Medical Director and Deputy Chief Executive roles at both Burton Hospitals NHS Trust and the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.  In 2022 he became Interim Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton before becoming Chief Medical Officer of independent healthcare provider Newson Health.

Prior to his executive roles, Magnus was a Consultant and Clinical Director in Emergency Medicine for 10 years.  He is also an Honorary Fellow at the University of Nottingham Medical School.

Prof Phil Wood, Chief Executive at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “I am delighted Magnus will be joining us in Leeds at such an important time. We have some exciting plans at the Trust including the introduction of two new elective care hubs, a new adult, children’s and maternity hospital and some ground-breaking research and innovation projects that are leading the way across the country.  Magnus’ experience and clinical leadership in this work and the wider Trust will be invaluable and I look forward to working with him”.

Said Magnus on his appointment: “I am delighted to be joining Leeds Teaching Hospitals as Chief Medical Officer.  Being originally from West Yorkshire, I am aware of the Trust’s strong reputation across the country for its positive culture, quality services and its commitment to improvement and innovation which I am really looking forward to finding out more about.

“There are some exciting things happening at Leeds, not least the recent news confirming the new hospital development at Leeds General Infirmary, but I am also aware, like everywhere else in the NHS, there are some big challenges to address to ensure we continue to provide timely and quality care for our patients and populations.”
