Welcome to the Complex Neuro-rehabilitation Unit’s Occupational Therapy team
Our team consists of Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy clinical support workers and we also often have student Occupational Therapists within the team undertaking placements. Where possible we aim for you to have a key Occupational Therapist who you will work regularly with, however you may see other members of the team during your stay.
Our work includes:
The role of the occupational Therapist is varied depending on your needs.
We work on any “occupations” or tasks which are important to you. For example this could be getting washed and dressed, household tasks such as cooking, cleaning and shopping, hobbies, or aspects of return to work.
We can provide assessment of how you are managing with these tasks, looking at cognition/thinking skills and movement, particularly with your upper limbs/arms but also the transfers and mobility involved within your daily tasks. Together we can set goals and formulate a rehabilitation plan with the aim to help you become as independent as possible within these tasks.
We also support with discharge planning and where appropriate this can include assessing the home environment, ordering equipment or referring for adaptations.
Intensity of your therapy will depend on your goals and needs. We see patients for 1:1 sessions as well as group sessions. Examples of groups we can run are a cooking group, gardening group, upper limb group, brain injury education group and a wellbeing/relaxation group amongst others.
Referral process
No referral is necessary; all patients admitted to the ward will be screened by an Occupational Therapist. Within this initial contact we will determine what your needs are and once you have been allocated to an Occupational Therapist, they will complete further assessment and set an initial treatment plan with you.
