The Regional Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service is based at Leeds General Infirmary. It is a specialist genetic and cardiac service providing a service for patients and their families with inherited cardiac conditions.
Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICCs) affect the heart and they can run in families.
Children and young people with close family members who have an ICC may be seen in the ICC service to check their heart. The ICC service involves a range of professionals including consultant cardiologists, geneticists, specialist nurses and other allied health professionals.
What are Inherited Cardiac Conditions?
Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions (or ICCs) are a group of different genetic conditions that mainly affect the heart or main blood vessels.
There are four main groups of conditions that we deal with:
- Cardiomyopathies – these conditions mainly affect the muscle of the heart.
- Ion channel disorders – these conditions mainly affect the electrical system of the heart.
- Neuromuscular conditions – these conditions affect both the muscles of the body and the muscle or electrical system of the heart.
- Conditions affecting the major blood vessels.
Referrals
Referrals into the ICC service can be done via two methods:
• GP referral – any patient with, or at risk of having an inherited cardiac condition who is not already being seen should be referred.
• Hospital referrals – any patient who has a suspected or confirmed diagnosis can be referred.
