Neonatal care is provided by the specialist teams from Leeds Children’s Hospital. Leeds has one of the largest neonatal services in the UK and the team provide specialist care to around 1,600 newborn babies each year, many who need intensive care or surgery.
What is a neonatal unit?
The Neonatal Unit is a hospital ward that cares for babies who need extra help after they are born. Some babies go there because they are born early, are very small, or they are unwell. Babies may need extra support from machines to breathe, stay warm, and feed.
There is a Neonatal Unit at St James’s Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary. Our specialist doctors and nurses at Leeds Children’s Hospital look after babies on the Neonatal Unit until they are well enough to go home. Some of our maternity teams including our specialist preterm team work very closely with the teams on the neonatal units.
Some babies may go to the Transitional Care ward, where parents can stay and help look after their baby with support from the nurses and midwives.
