Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating even when the temperature is not hot. It is a condition that can result in patients becoming anxious and embarrassed. There are many causes that can result in this condition such as medication, overactive thyroid gland, infection to name but a few.
Obvious symptoms can result in an easy diagnosis, however blood testing can also determine if excessive sweating is due to possible other medical conditions such as low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) or overactive thyroid.
Treatments
Patients are usually given the choice between medication and Botox injections.
Botox: This treatment is chosen by the majority of the patients and with largely successful results. Following the initial consultation patients arrange a later appointment and given specific instructions pre-treatment.
Botox Injections
‘Minor Starch Test’ carried out, this involves applying Betadine to the treated area, once dry a thin layer of cornflour is sprinkled over. This will identify the main areas of sweating which is then marked. Once the patient has consented they will be given tiny injections of Botox within the affected area. A dressing is then applied and post procedure advice given. If the procedure is successful the patient will revisit vascular outpatient’s periodically for further treatments.
