Emergency O Rh(D) Negative Blood - General Guidance

Emergency blood stock is held at specific sites throughout the Trust. Group O Rh(D) Negative blood should be used for children and females of child bearing age. Group O Rh(D) Positive blood may be used for males and post menopausal females. Currently, group O Rh(D) positive blood is not kept as emergency stock within the Trust. At SJUH and the LGI, 4 group A plasma are kept thawed in the laboratory which together with the 4 O Negative red cells constitute the Major Haemorrhage Pack.

  • This stock is only to be used when a delay caused by requesting "type specific" or "cross matched" units may be life threatening.
  • A transfusion group and save sample should be taken before administration.
  • Patients with known antibodies should NOT be given emergency stock - contact the Transfusion Department.
  • When emergency units are used, inform the Transfusion Department immediately so they may be replaced.
  • Emergency stock should still be scanned out using the Blood Track system.
