Osmolality is an indicator of plasma tonicity / concentration, and can be useful in the assessment of fluid and electrolyte balance, particularly hyponatraemia.

Additional Information Osmolality will usually be increased in water depletion, DKA, hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state (HHS), diabetes insipidus, and with alcohol ingestion. Osmolality will usually be low in adrenal insufficiency, water intoxication and SIADH. Please note: test can only be added to samples within 6 hours of collection (adults) OR within 2 hours of collection (paediatric). For information on water deprivation test, please see WDT page.

Collection Con Intensive care units, renal unit, transplant unit, patients on IV heparin use lithium-heparin (Green with Yellow ring) tube. Minimum volume - 250µl serum / plasma
