Valproate

Valproate is used in the treatment of absence seizures. It inhibits the enzymes gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminas (GABA) which results in an increased concentration of GABA in the brain. GABA is an inhibitor of pre and post synaptic discharges in the CNS.

Additional Information For an adult on a single dose of valproate the half life is 16 hrs but for an adult on chronic therapy the half life is only 12 hrs.
