C difficile ribotyping

Ribotyping on Clostridium difficile isolates from patients with Clostridium difficile infection allows for the identification of certain strains such as 027 that can be difficult to control when causing outbreaks and/or may be associated with poor clinical outcome.

Additional Information Prior discussion with your Regional Microbiologist is recommended.
Results will be issued in the form of a PCR ribotype. Outbreak would be confirmed if ribotypes match from suspected patients

Collection Con C. difficile toxin positive stool or C. difficile culture isolate For LTHT samples ribotype testing would be performed using the original cytotoxin positive sample held in the laboratory. Testing can be requested through the infection control nurses on the PHE CDRN electronic requesting and reporting system.
