Detection of Mycoplasma pnuemoniae by PCR. Investigated as a common cause of tracheobronchitis and community acquired pneumonia. PCR detection allows for earlier treatment as serological identification may only be achieved some time after initial infection.

Tube NPA BAL Tracheal aspirate- send secretions in white universal Nose and throat combined swab -Copan swab

Availability Respiratory testing at weekends is normally performed on Sundays only except in peak influenza season
Additional Information Sputum samples may be tested after discussion with consultant virologist
