Dr Sharma is a clinical advisor to NHS England and also a professional clinical advisor for quality assurance visits over seen by NHS England. She has been involved in updating breast screening and symptomatic guidelines at a national level.
Dr Sharma is active in research and is the chief investigator for the first breast screening trial in the UK, looking at the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the film reading process. This was funded by NHSXAI. She is the chief investigator for the first study in the UK looking at the role of AI as a reader assist role in the symptomatic setting to support double reading process. She is passionate about innovations that improve the patient pathway and is currently looking at how AI can support the technologist performing mammograms to reduce positioning errors through education and training.
She has over 50 peer reviewed publications and is recognised as an expert in her field. She is specialist editor for breast for Clinical Radiology. She is a national and international speaker. She has supported many international breast centres to set up pathways focusing on minimising over treatment of high-risk lesions. She reviews abstracts for Radiological Society North America (RSNA), European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI), European Congress of Radiology (ECR) and American College of Radiology (ACR)
She sits on a large number of committees, including British Society of Breast Radiology (BSBR), European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) scientific committee, Radiology Clinical Professional Group for breast screening.
She is a Trustee for Breast Cancer Now and Symposium Mammographicum.
In 2024 was awarded the most influential South Asian in Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.
