The LTHT Renal Research Team is committed to conducting quality clinical trials to better understand kidney diseases and improve on current management and treatments.

Our mission is to address health inequalities and develop targeted strategies to improve access to research. Our team is dedicated and always open to discussing kidney research with you.

Current research

We conduct a variety of clinical trials investigating new medicines, medical devices, and software for better diagnosis, management, and treatment of kidney disease. Our research covers dialysis, transplant, acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and general nephrology.

Qualitative research to explore patient’s experience of their acute kidney injury after hospital admission. The aim of the study is to understand and target improvements in the quality of post-discharge care following Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). It is open to patients aged 18 or over who have had an episode of hospital care complicated by AKI or have had a readmission within 30 days of a hospital admission complicated by AKI.

The aim of this study is to see whether blood volume measurements can help to make fluid management more individualised. This could reduce the impact of dialysis on patients’ health and improve patients’ experience of the treatment. This study is open to all adults on dialysis.

iBox is a software to predict kidney allograft function and survival after kidney transplant. Patients on this trial have benefited from this new software to improve their outcomes due to earlier detection of graft function decline allowing early intervention.

Qualitative research targeted at patients from ethnic minority backgrounds to understand their views and experiences about kidney disease, treatment and management. It is open to adults 18 and above from ethnic minority backgrounds who are undergoing treatments for kidney diseases in England.

Kidney Transplantation in Highly Sensitised Patients. Open to all genders and ages 18 –75 years. Study duration is 15 months. The aim of the trial is to investigate the efficacy and safety of the study drug, Imlifidase.

Be Part of Research

Research initiative designed to gather information from patients with rare kidney diseases to improve treatment and identify possible causes of these rare diseases. Open to all genders and ages including 18 years and above.

Be Part of Research

The NIHR BioResource Rare Diseases project recruits affected participants in more than 60 disease areas, including renal. Each disease area has its own eligibility criteria. Renal cohorts include, C3 Glomerulopathy, Dense Deposit Disease, IgA Nephropathy, Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis MPGN, and Membranous Nephropathy.

Rare Diseases BioResource

Non-invasive diagnostic approach to assess kidney transplant health. Additional blood and urine samples are taken just before kidney transplant and post-transplant at 6 scheduled time points, over 3 months, in line with your routine care. Open to all genders and ages 18-80 years.
