You may be referred by your GP or another hospital specialist. The unit has expertise in investigating and treating the full range of colorectal conditions including:
- Colon and Rectal Cancer
- Anal Cancer
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease)
- Diverticular Disease
- Haemorrhoids
- Anal Fissure and Fistula
- Pelvic Floor Disorders including: Faecal Incontinence, Bowel Prolapse, and Obstructed Defaecation Syndrome.
Patients are referred to The John Goligher Colorectal Surgery Unit from around the region and the country as it has particular expertise in some areas including:
- Laparoscopic (keyhole) Bowel Surgery
- Robotic Bowel Surgery
- Sacral Nerve Stimulation for Incontinence
- Recurrent Rectal Cancer
- Advanced and Recurrent Anal Cancer
- Transanal Endoscopic Operations (TEO)
- Pouch Surgery for Ulcerative Colitis
- Complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Intestinal Fistula and Failure
The Unit also deals with General Surgical conditions such as:

- Colorectal Nurse Specialists (nurses who work closely with the surgeons, providing support, advice and information for patients and who help patients with stoma bags learn how to manage them).
- Enhanced Recovery Programme Nurse Specialists – The Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Programme helps to enable safe, earlier discharge from hospital after major abdominal surgery.
- Radiologists (x-ray specialists).
- Pathologists (specialists who examine body tissue samples under the microscope).
- Oncologists (specialists who deal with medical treatments for cancer).
- GI Physiologists (specialists in certain investigations related to bowel incontinence and difficulty going to the toilet).
