Your journey through the Antenatal Clinic (ANC)

Your referral is received

Your referral will be reviewed by a midwife or doctor and an appointment will be sent to you if required.

On the day of your appointment

Please check in at reception and take a seat in the Antenatal Clinic waiting area. You will be called by a Maternity Support Worker (MSW)

Initial observations

The MSW will:

• Check your blood pressure
• Test your urine sample
• Record your carbon monoxide (CO) reading

Wait

After this, you will return to the waiting area until your name is called by the doctor.

Your clinic appointment

You will be seen by a doctor who will:

• Review your results and maternity notes
• Discuss your pregnancy and any concerns
• Review scan or blood test results
• Plan the next steps in your care

After your appointment

If no further action is required, your care will continue with your community midwife.

You may be referred to the Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU), Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC), Fetal Assessment Unit (FAU), or another specialist department if further monitoring or assessment is needed.

You may be asked to return for a follow-up clinic appointment. This will be requested by the Doctor who has reviewed you.

Key Points

Please bring your maternity notes and a fresh urine sample to every appointment.

There may be a short wait to see the doctor, but we aim to see you at the time of your scheduled appointment wherever possible. Your clinician may also need time to prepare your notes or arrange follow-up appointments.

You do not need a full bladder unless you are having a dating or anatomy ultrasound scan.

Appointments can take up to 45 minutes depending on your care needs.

If you arrive late, we will do our best to see you, but your appointment may need to be rearranged.

We know that juggling appointments and childcare can be challenging, especially during pregnancy. Wherever possible, please arrange childcare before attending your maternity appointment. If you’re concerned about attending because of childcare difficulties, please get in touch with the maternity team as soon as you can. We are here to help and discuss any concerns you may have.

Where is the Antenatal Clinic located?

Leeds General Infirmary – A Floor, Clarendon wing. The Antenatal Clinic entrance is located behind Clarendon Wing reception desk near to the Green Parrot Café.

St James’s Hospital – 4th Floor, Gledhow wing. The Antenatal Clinic entrance is located opposite the Eye Clinic on Level 4.
