Orthodontics is only possible if there is no dental decay, gum disease, and if the teeth and gums are cleaned properly so that there is no plaque on them. Unless this is the case, treatment cannot be started as it will risk permanent damage to the teeth.
Once treatment has started, if the teeth, gums, and braces are not thoroughly cleaned by the patient, the brace will have to be removed to avoid permanent damage. This might mean treatment is left unfinished.
Other risks of orthodontics include:
- Shortening of the roots of teeth.
- Loss of gum and bone around the tooth (gingival recession).
- Movement of the teeth after treatment unless care is taken to maintain the result by wearing retainers.
The options, risks and benefits of treatment will be discussed with you in detail before treatment is started.
