Our laboratory provides a Haemoglobinopathy screening service that includes Antenatal, Regional Newborn screening, pre-operative screening, the provision of a monitoring service for patients with haemoglobin disorders for the clinical teams and family self referrals through GPs.
We screen approximately 25,000 adults and 45,000 newborns each year using dedicated equipment and IT systems. The laboratory is well supported by expert Consultant Haematologists, paediatricians, neonatologists and an expert nursing team in order to diagnose, monitor and ensure clinical care for individuals with clinically severe haemoglobinopathies.
Further information for parents on the tests in the newborn screening panel and the whole newborn screening process can be found on the nhs.uk website.
Screening for sickle cell and thalassaemia
The screening laboratory is open from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday.
There is no formal commitment to provide an analytical service outside opening hours.
