Our Specialist Physiotherapists work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide rehabilitation for children following neurological insult or surgery. Assessment and treatment focus on movement, strength, balance and coordination. Our aim is to help children and young people maximise their potential and participate in everyday life. We use games, general play and activities that are age appropriate and functional. We use an individualised goal setting approach to rehabilitation. Family members are actively encouraged to be involved.
Children generally see a physiotherapist following any acute neurological event in particular after a head injury, spinal cord injury, removal of a brain tumour and before and after Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery.
Our physiotherapists see children on the ward and in outpatient clinics. Outpatient clinics include the spasticity clinics (SDR and ITB) and botulinum toxin clinics. Children requiring ongoing input after discharge will be referred to their local community team.
The lead physiotherapists for the team are Katie Davis, Kate McCune and Catherine Wilsmore.
