We provide physiotherapy input for all children and young people cared for in the Regional Children’s and Teenager’s Oncology and Haematology Service. We see inpatients and patients attending outpatient clinics.
We assess and treat patients who have a range of problems caused directly by their diagnosis or indirectly due to side effects of their medical treatment. As physiotherapists we help with mobility, function, muscle weakness, muscle tightness, chest infections, fatigue and delayed development. We advise on how to maintain appropriate levels of physical fitness and exercise throughout and following treatment.
As we are a regional centre patients often need physiotherapy input closer to home therefore we liaise and support our paediatric physiotherapy colleagues at other hospitals around the region to ensure continuity of care.
We have an open referral pathway. All professionals (internal or external), patients and carers can refer patients to the team if they have concerns relating to any of the above difficulties.
The Lead Physiotherapist for the service is Liz Whitehead.
